I found out this weekend that one of my all-time favorite guitarists passed away. Denis "Piggy" D'Amour of the Canadian metal band Voivod died Friday night. Voivod are absolutely one of the best metal bands of all time. I don't call many musicians geniuses, but Denis was a genius guitarist and songwriter. There is not another guitarist who ever sounded like Piggy, and although he inspired legions of metalheads, no one has ever been able to touch his method, style, and songwriting ability. The first time I ever heard them in 1986, I was hooked. But "Nothingface" really blew my mind in 1989 and I think that is their masterpiece. There are few bands in any genre that have released as many albums as Voivod and all 13 of them are great records. I only got to see Voivod once in Memphis 1996 as a three piece, but they were still light years ahead of other bands. Voivod had found a third wind with their original singer Snake and former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted in the band. It sucks that they never got the success they really deserved, but they will always have my respect.
