The Cooters "Punk Metal" CD review

These guys definitely play metal, with a bit of driving punk. And a dash of southern rock.  They incorporate the driving rhythms of MOTORHEAD, some fancy lead work, and political lyrics, to a punk sensivility, and sense of melody. Think the first SUICIDAL TENDENCIES Lp duking it out with the better bits of LYNARD SKYNRD.  Their third full length and it rocks!

Bands like The Cooters make my job extremely easy, mainly because they’ve called themselves The Cooters, and especially because they’ve called their album Punk Metal. Oh yeah, they’re from Mississippi too, the dudes in the band have names like Raw Cooter, Neuter Cooter, and Judas Cooter, and their songs are about carpetbaggers and redneck sluts from hell. Pretty simple, right?

Trailer park hyperbole aside, however, this is a pretty bitchin’ rock n’ roll record, snakin’ its way through the tall grass with Dirty Power riffs, DRI kicks, and Nashville Pussy licks. Songs like “The Gooch,” “Crusty,” “Kill them With Kindness,” and “Life Like” come barking at you like a junkyard dog on a loose leash, while “Woo Lord!” is a sugar coated, Bolanesque melody maker, making it the best of the bunch here – the one shiny hit on this otherwise lean n’ mean grease parade. So, they’ve got the pedigree, the juvenile tendencies, and the catchy rock tunes. Pretty simple. Next time though, I want to see some actual cooter on the album artwork.

COOTERS, THE: Punk Metal: CD
Something a little different from the PE collective this time around. Based on the title, you should be able to guess what this is going to sound like. It's more metal than punk, though. These guys play a Motorhead-meets-Biohazard, headbanging, lighters-in-the-air, air-guitar-solo-playing fanfare. Excellent production throughout; you can hear everything. The drums are punchy and the guitars crunch like eating granola. The bass gives you the lows that thumps on your chest when you have the volume up. If these guys were playing at the bar after I had my tenth round, they would have me pissing in my pants while I rocked to the beat. -Donofthedead (Profane Existence)

This excert is from a column of new music.
To put it in context, read the whole thing!

In a similar vein to Omegalord is The Cooters' aptly titled "Punk Metal." Where Omegalord tilt towards the metal end of the spectrum, The Cooters go for a more punk / hardcore inflected sound, think Zeke by way of Antiseen by way of Negative Approach by way of Hanoi Rocks. I bet you think I'm joking... see the second half of the album and songs like "Kill Them With Kindness" and "Woo Lord" which sounds a bit like Lynyrd Skynyrd doing Hanoi Rocks. The sudden switch from the nastier material to the more listener friendly stuff, "Wheel in Motion" is all chugging and screaming then it's the aforementioned "Kill Them With Kindness", might throw some people, but the band is equally adept at both styles so who am I to complain? "Punk Metal" is out on Profane Existence.

Surprise, surprise! This is the first band released on Profane Existence I heard which isn´t a dead-serious, gloomy crust band with ragged clothes begging us to be against something they found unjust. Not that these lads are solely apolitical party animals but they use satire to get their point across in the same jolly and obnoxious way that S.O.D., Fear or Antiseen did. Musically its metal played with an punk attitude and lyrically its snotty as punk and a bit crude as in metal and together its music which you can both shake your fist and drink beer to. ...and why not? They aren´t groundbreaking in any way but I can´t recall any obvious influences when listening to this, maybe a faster and rowdier Corrosion of Conformity or Nine Pound Hammer, that´s still far-fetched but maybe you get the picture?

Right the minute I heard that The Cooters from Mississippi have unleashed a new record upon the world and on, I have been (well ok, not anxious but definitely) curious to hear what they have in store for us. Their previous album “The Moon Will Rise Again” was a decent album moving within general rock'n'roll borders carrying some stoner elements (in the riffing area), but what gave it special tone was the band’s special sense of humour and the way they passed that through their music.

On to “Punk Metal” then. Some might object to the album’s title, as it might sound too pompous and too “arrogant” since it comes from a pretty unknown band. OK, “Punk Metal” in no way carries the specific weight of other monumental albums that named whole genres (for example Venom’s “Black Metal”, etc.) but its title couldn’t be more fitting. Because this is exactly what The Cooters are all about here. Maybe this will cause disappointment upon most of the Monolith regulars, but it seems that The Cooters have pretty much got completely rid of any stoner influences they carried, and brought out their most “straightforward” features: fast-paced tempos, punk riffs blended with aggressive vocals; move this whole image a bit to the metal side, and you have a pretty good idea of what goes on here.

That is until track 6, “Wheels in Motion”, because from “Kill Them with Kindness” and on, the band shows some more melodic and maybe even glam elements, a fact that actually adds to the variety factor, making the album more pleasant to listen to.

There’s not really much else to tell about this album; it certainly won’t make the world shake or anything, but still it’s a great piece of work which, by the way, and with no disposal for exaggeration, has some of the best sound productions I have heard on the genre. Each instrument sounds crystal clear on the speakers while the whole outcome maintains the aggressiveness needed. This is a big deal, considering that the band (Neuter, Raw and Judas Cooter) recorded “Punk Metal” by themselves in a period of almost three years. I shouldn’t let the lyrics area pass by, as they deal with political and social matters in an interesting way; humorous, smart and sometimes caustic.

Anyway, as I said again, this album probably doesn’t interest the 95% of the readers here, but it’s a really good album nevertheless. On the other side, if, besides stoner or doom, you’re into punk, metal or hardcore in general as well, I could bet that in “Punk Metal” you’ll find many elements you’ll like; songs full of energy, great solos, and some food for thought. And that’s definitely a plus.

PUNK-METAL. - www.greedrecords.de

"PUNK-METAL. THE COOTERS are three Punk Metal fanatics out of Mississippi. After two releases, they now introduce their newest album. Musically the trio offers a really interesting mixture out of Punk Rock, Rock n' roll, an orderly portion of dirty rock music and Metal. Wants to be named that here punkige guitars knock on little rock n' roll enclosures, that are interrupted then again by a Metal snatched up or a guitar solo. With ''Carpetbaggers'' there is singed even one, that easy Hip Hop influences shows and reminds a few of earlier BEASTIE BOYS. Altogether the 10 offer singe each quantity Abwechselung and joke. The CD contains moreover yet the video to '' The Gooch''. Not the most typical Profane Existence release. "

A cooter(s) is not a turtle, at least not any more. Nor is it anything vulgar, well, not really. The Cooters are the charged, fire-fed bustle of regional punk and metal.  The Cooters formed in 1993; Newt, Raw, and Tyler Keith were the original three (Tyler on drums). Tyler left and formed the Neckbones that year. This is when Judas joined on drums. Since the commencement of the Cooters, Raw, Neuter, and Judas, they have heftily toured the south-playing with Before I Hang, The Lewds, The Preacher's Kids, Molly Hatchet, and Nashville Pussy. Despite the addition of a fourth a couple of times in their line-up, they will remain, for now, a three piece.

Their latest release is aptly titled "Punk Metal"; it is a collection of songs the Cooters have been performing live for the past few years. "Punk Metal", produced by Tom Queyja with the Cooters, was released on Profane Existence", a Minneapolis label of like bands: Blown to Bits, Behind Enemy Lines, and Provoked. "Punk Metal", like most of the Cooters' material blends the anxious with the humorous acrimony of their solid rock sound. They have an anthemic sound to their chaos-a metal, political, or clever ballad up their sleeve at all times. The Cooters reiterate the power of the three-piece. The next Cooters album is called "Chaos or Bust"-tracks will include "Reign Lunacy," "Crapple Pie," "Love to Hate", and "A Hell on Earth". "Chaos or Bust" was the last record to be recorded at Easley/ McCain studios.  The studio would burn soon after. For now, put "Punk Metal" on your plate.
