Interesting tidbits... Newt comes from a couple of families of musicians: The Rayburns and The Hookers of north Mississippi.
The Rayburns... Newt's Dad...
Newt's Grandfather, Harry Rayburn Sr., was a multi-talented musician originally from Abbeville, Mississippi. Harry played everything from banjo to French Horn but ultimately thrived as the conductor of bands and orchestras throughout the 1930's and 1940's in North Mississippi, including The Mississippi College Orchestra, The Choctaw Playboys, and the high school bands of Moss Point and Brookhaven, Mississippi.
Newt's Dad, Tommy Rayburn, was the bassist for the Kangaroos and the Sugar Cube Blues Band in the late 1960's. He released a few singles on Bell and the Stax affiliate Hip Records. Issac Hayes produced one single that featured the Staple Singers on background vocals. Tommy was a strong supporter of The Cooters and Newt inherited much of his music talent from his father, who started Newt out many years ago on bass guitar.
Newt's brother, Carver Rayburn, is a bass player who has played with many bands over the years including Boko Maru Madness and Dead Zendo Street. Newt's other brother, Shelby Rayburn, is a live sound engineer in Oxford.
Newt's uncle, Harry Rayburn Jr., was well known in the late 1960's throughout Mississppi for his drumming with the Pre-Dawn 5 and the Sundowners. Recorded by Dann Penn at Muscle Schoals, Alabama, The Pre-Dawn 5 released several garage rock records. But Harry Jr. was also widely acclaimed throughout the State for his drum solos. In fact, Harry played many packed shows back in the day, armed with a drum kit, neon paint, and some black lights!!!
Harry Jr.'s son is Tyler Rayburn, the hard hittin' percussionist for DayBreakDown!
The Hookers... Newt's mom....
Newt's mom is Elizabeth Gray Hooker Herron, a successful businesslady in Meridian, Mississippi. Beth was also one hell of a piano player back in the day. I wish Mom would play piano like she used to!
Newt's uncle Dr. Phil Hooker is a trumpeteer and a singer often heard in the First Baptist Church of West Point, Mississippi.
Dr. Phil's son is Andrew Hooker, guitarist formerly of the West Point band Grounded Pilots. Andrew currently lives and records right outside of Nashville, Tennessee and has a GREAT fusion rock band called Vinyl Soup.
Newt's other cousin is Phillip Hooker, was a studio engineer for many years in Los Angeles, Nashville, and Orlando. Phillip worked on many albums with artists like LL Cool J and Shaquille O'Neal.
Newt's step-sister, Elizabeth Ann Herron, is a beautiful singer who is often sings at the Catholic church in Meridian, Mississippi.
