Idle Beats by Tobie Baker

From 8x12, Oxford, Mississippi, Fall 1996:

"Merriam Webster decribes a cooter as any freshwater turtle, and on a good day a cooter can be found on any Mississippi highway. But the Oxford music scene understands The Cooters to be the state's foremost heavy metal band.

The impressive heavy metal trio received the name after a visit from aliens on Halloween a few years back. The alien invasion torched a massive section of The Cooters kudzu patch, and in the smoldering field they discovered a turtle."

Raw Cooter once played with Oxford's original, rowdy punk band, Nightmare on Sesame Street. Raw even received a personal letter from the Dead Kennedys front man, Jello Biafra, while a member of the band. Biafra was impressed with a ditty entitled, "Let's Smash the Klan." and he applauded these Mississippi punks for tagging a song with this title in the Deep South.

The additional Cooters also have first rate resumes.  Both Neuter Cooter and Judas Cooter have previously joined forces in the Backwoods Mississippi Anarchy Orchestra with Tom Queyja, guitarist of the funk sensation, Wobitty. In fact, Judas was the original drummer for the pre-Wobitty ensemble, Bruthafiend. While Neuter previously jammed with Queyja in Dead Fish and was the original guitarist fo the Minneapolis punk trio, Pissed.

Raw, Neuter, and Judas recently celebrated the release of the debut CD at Proud Larry's.  The Cooters not only rocked the joint, but the also induced the Rev. Eloy Alfaro to ecstacy. 'I had a rip-roaring good time,' proclaims Alfaro. 'It was a fine display of raw animal magnetism that brought out the best in all of us.'

The Cooters have considered rolling the dice on the Sunset Strip in LA, and were recently asked to send MTV a video.  But The Cooters favor the gambling odds in Mississippi, since so many bands crap out on the West coast.

So you should be bummin' hard if you overlooked their powerful performance. But don't worry. You can pick up the Cooter CD and other Cooter memorabilia at Uncle Bucks. But don't sit in a daze and miss the Cooter invasion again."
